sprog

Hello all

I am looking for a RS232 version of a sprog.

Is there anybody got any old stock? Or does any one know if an usb one can be converted (tracks/pads still there and chips and remove usb chip).

They have replaced babies' umbilical cords with plug & play USB cords?

The person who develops a DCC decoder to control a baby would be a Hero. Meanwhile has anybody thought about doing sound decoders for dolls, you could really drive a household mad with all the sounds an infant might make. G.Harman

Assume you have an old machine that doesnt have USB ports. Was looking at something similar recently, connecting a USB printer to computer serial port. Quick look showed there are cables for connecting serial printers to USB ports but not USB printers to serial ports. Even if he had then his operating system may not have supported USB ports anyway so needed a serial printer device driver.Suggested he would be far better off dumping his system and getting a new one - even if its second hand. Theres so many cheap devices around nowadays that use USB its not worth struggling with an old system. OK thats an aside, but you may want to consider the same route and get a new PC.

SNIP...

Was woken at 4:30am on xmas morning by a singing, dancing santa. Should anyone have more suggestions about sound devices in toys then could they get their coat before approaching a keyboard.

Have you ever played cricket? (or baseball) A gentle sweep for a six will quieten most sound devices in toys.

You should have just left the Mince Pies out and forgotten the Sherry.

OTH It's what air rifles are for but not in front of the Children.

Bit drastic! How about a USB card for the old PC?

Only if operating system supports it - if old pc then w95 ?

Not really drastic by time spent money on card and cables then near cost of second hand pc - one dumped from work etc.

I have new-ish pc with usb (and RS232). But my plan is for a 1970's layout controlled by 1970' computing whereas I have a RS232 interface for my commodore pet I don't think I'll be able to source an usb unit for it.

Reasons for such archaic hardware is: -

  1. See above.
  2. Its simple to program I know basic and 6502.
  3. Once the program is working, blow it to EPROM and boot up time is a couple of seconds.
  4. It's a mountain I want to climb.

One Christmas we went camping with my parents. Mum bought my then 6 year old son a machine gun with "realistic sound". My parents grumped for two days because we didn't keep him quiet!

I have the printer output connections for the ZX81 somewhere!

My 6 yo grandson's other grandfather bought him a remote-control police car with wailing sirens and other noises. Son-in-law complained his father never let him have noise-making toys when he was a kid.

Do PCs still have a parallel port? My 2005 model has, but has no RS232.

Ambitious with a lot of spare time on your hands :-) Now I do respect and understand your plan but presume you will have to start right from the beginning with programming user interface and comms for Pet to sprog before you do any controlling of trains/layout - thats extra ambitious as suspect sprog stuff written in C++ or Java with calls to Microsoft functions, not easy at all to port, easier to write from scratch !

Perhaps Nigel can confirm ?

Noticed theres lots of things granma lets the tot have that I couldnt - and still cant ! But when she gets him noisy stuff I insist it stays at her house - never does though :-)

He won a girlie prize on the tombola at an exhibition a year ago, they lat him swap it for a whoopie cushion - I frequently reminded the stallholders (with a smile of course) that they gave it to him so dont blame me whenever it went off.

You can get those in remote control now!

And usually being a cheap item the Remote control from another one will work it just as well. Much to the embarrassment of the son of a mate who did not realise the one he owned and was carrying in his luggage had been switched on by us a few hours before. He did not even realise we had shadowed him as far as the gangway of the ship he was joining as a young Officer Cadet and were able to watch his embarresment as he waited in line in his crisp new uniform to board.

I have no idea as to what the "sprog" is that has been discussed, but my knowledge dates from those eras (electronics degree 1972, softy, and for the first 10 years in career as assembler programmer), so if you need any help or guidance please sing out.

I did have one 6502 program published (hand-crafted machine code without benefit of an assembler!), "3-D Quark Invaders" for the short-lived Oric.
