Final obvious one, in tools/options/general. half way down send/receive messages. Set if not connected to 'do not connect'.

Always has been :o(

It stems from the days of dialup when scammers would install autodialers without my knowledge or consent.

Always had firewall and virus s/w so never encountered that !

Amazing how many ways there are to screw up a connection. Tools/accounts/news select the (one ?) accounts /properties/connection. ensure select box is unchecked for always connect to .....

Firewall and a/v makes no difference. A popup panel appears asking if you would like to install some piece of software or other: "yes/no". The natural inclination is to click "no". Clicking anywhere on the sceen (including X for eXit) is deemed to have answered "yes". The autodialler then installs itself on your PC. It lies dormant until it determines there's been no PC activity for at least 10 mins (ie: you're out of the room) then dials some island in the south pacific at £3 a minute hosting a website that you wouldn't be seen dead looking at even if it was the last website on earth.

I was lucky enough to hear the modem in the act of dialling and pulled the mains plug on the PC. I then rang BT to complain where both an operator and her supervisor pleaded total ignorance. I read later there had been many thousands of complaints similar to mine made to OfTel that month alone. BT of course were getting 50% of the rake-off from the scam.

Always have done, and I double check after installing any new program to ensure the settings haven't been altered in any way.

Yes remember that one now ! Didnt apply to me as I had ISDN.

Amazing how many ways there are to screw up a connection. Meant M/S with the number of places that the OE can be configured/reconfigured.

So have you looked at the following in express :- Tools/accounts/news select the (one ?) accounts /properties/connection. ensure select box is unchecked for always connect to .....

Then I suggest its out of step with IE cos IE installed after this connection defined. So you have the choice of live with it or delete and recreate. Does mean it will (probably) have to reload all messages.

I deleted my account accidentally, twice!

Fortunately I save all settings to a separate drive before each shutdown so was able to get almost all the messages back.

Yes but now you have everything set so it uses IE connection instead of trying to do its own thing you need to delete the account then re-create it. On re-creation it should pick up the 'use IE' and not try to connect or detect a connection. It will download all messages anyway - if thats what you want.

Thanks, I can live with it. If it's a choice between losing my record of previous posts and having to click one extra send button, I prefer the latter.

BTW, you should really meet my dad (Major Anton Frederick Philips, Royal Army Medical Corps). You wouldn't believe he was a psychiatrist either :o)

its only the news account you should delete and re-define, not your outlook profile. So you wont (ok are unlikely to - I didnt) lose the posts youve sent - theyre in outlook mail files. Will just lose received ones, hence they will be re-downloaded.

I think it is what I did after installing IE 7, not certain cos just hacked around as usual.

Quite happy to believe youre a psychiatrist, it was you being a criminal that seemed less likely.
