I doubt if anyone really knows the answer about the oil residue. Both methanol and nitro methane are quite volitile and very flamable so a reasonable person would expect very little of either to be in the oil residue. Any that did not burn should have stayed in the vapors of the exhaust rather then being deposited in the oill I am sure if you did a trace analysis on the oil you would find small amounts of both. But it would be small. As an offhand guess tenths or hundreths of a percent or less. The big question is what happens to the oil?
Combustion temperatures plus oxygen plus oil leads to all kinds of chemistry that is not particularly predictable. Given the right oil and the right conditions you would undoubtedly make some aromatics and probably some polycyclic aromatics. These might or might not be fair skin carcinogens on long term exposure.
On the other hand we have anecdotal evidence from pilots who breathed lots of castor oil fumes back in the days of two cycle full scale engines. These guys may have had some problems with loose stools but I know of no evidence that they suffered any more long term health problems then non pilots. Off hand I do not know if they had any synthetics in those fuels back then. Synthetics would have a different breakdown pattern. We also do not seem to have a lot of modelers getting skin cancer on their hands from such exposures.
And if you keep your engine rich like you should there should be little breakdown to start with.
So I think the risk is minimal. Probably not zero but little in life has zero risk. After you clean your plane wash your hands and you should be safe enough to not have to worry. If you had the residue on your hands 24/7 maybe it would be a problem. But for a few minutes per week I just do not think there is a measurable added risk. Toxicology is all about the exposure. Given enough exposure most anything will kill you. But the risks are not linear with exposure. Risk usually (always?) goes up exponentially with exposure. As we seldom ever know the real mathematical shape of the risk curve the usual practice is to use a linear extrapolation for safety calculations as this gives an absolute worst case.
To illustrate a linear extrapolation suppose I were to determine the LD50 for rats being dropped off a ladder onto concrete. At 100 feet all the rats die. At 50 feet almost all the rats die. At 25 feet half the rats die so 25 feet is the LD50. Now how many rats would die if dropped 1 foot? A linear extrapolation would say 2% (50% times
1/25). Well we all know that is way to large a death rate for 1 foot. It would be 0% at 1 foot.To put it in perspective you can and do make polycyclic aromatics when you grill a steak over charcoal. Some small amounts wind up on the steak. Do you refuse to eat charcoal grilled steak? If you do could I have your portion?
Your question is a very good question. It is the kind of thing we should all consider in all sorts of situations. And a bit of effort to keep stuff out of our bodies is never misplaced. I do not care if it is glo fuel, MEK, gasoline or paint thinner. They do not belong in your body. But it also does not mean you can not use them. Just use common sense to minimize exposures.
