When trying to shim a latch with the little dead latch incorporated into it like is used on almost all KIK locks remember that if the deadlatch is allowed to bottom in the latch pocket in the door frame the main latch will shim right back. Alot of times some half ass secret squirrel has done the job for you by using the wrong srtike or making some other f*ck up but if not often you can push or pull the door enough that the deadlocking latch will fall past the strike. This works probably 60+% on all wood doors. Keep pressure in whatever direction on the door while you shim the latch back so the whole damn thing doesn't bind up.
