Be careful with shotguns

Gunner, you bastard!

That took not only balls, but also belly.

I love it!

With those bbl lengths you are losing a lot of the power of the shotgun and gaining a lot of muzzle blast, it will deafen you indoors. At least the unburned powder might set the perps shirt on fire ;)

You've paid the appropriate taxes of course.

Not sure how much energy you're going to get out of it and controlling a 12 gage with a barrel that short would worry me--if you've got one assailant and get a good hit with the first shot you're golden, if you've got two and they're armed you may be in trouble. With the short barrel though make _damned_ sure that you're getting enough energy in the pellets to achieve a useful degree of penetration against an assailant in heavy clothing.

Do practice some gunfight scenarios with those and make sure that you can actually hit multiple assailants in a reasonable time with full-up loads.

Rawther... But I like it! Sounds like something I would have done :)

(BTW: Post this one over in alt.tasteless, and you'll be a pretty much instant celebrity)

Why not use a setscrew instead of a dowel, if I picture your hack correctly?

The aim of untold millions is to be free to do exactly as they choose and for someone else to pay when things go wrong.

In the past few decades, a peculiar and distinctive psychology has emerged in England. Gone are the civility, sturdy independence, and admirable stoicism that carried the English through the war years . It has been replaced by a constant whine of excuses, complaints, and special pleading. The collapse of the British character has been as swift and complete as the collapse of British power.

Theodore Dalrymple,

That would work, but there wouldn't be a lot of room for tapping, since the hole lined up with the hammer pivot hole. This was about 30 yrs. ago, when all I had was hand tools and Dad's old drill press in the dirt floored barn. It's a pretty good hack, and fairly safe. The old factory sear notch was hooked so bad that the hammer actually rotated further back as you pulled the trigger.

I've always been leery of amateur sear-hammer stoning. I've seen a few that I refused to be around loaded. Rolled right out of engagement with the slightest bounce. And then there's marvelous jobs like my Citation, where the engagement looks like a +, with metal in opposite quadrants. I wouldn't dream of trying to reproduce that on a working firearm. One thing's for damned sure on that pistol (and a good rule in general), don't stick your finger in that hole 'til you're on target.

OK, here's the question then - I have taught my daughter to not use the safety on her bolt action rifle (marlin 880), at the range the rules are you are either shooting, or the weapon is on the bench with the action open and the muzzle pointed downrange.

I felt that relying on a safety is a mistake, am I teaching her the wrong habits?

Jim

All gun safety measures are meant to be practiced IN ADDITION to other measures. The idea is that there is plenty of redundancy in the inevitable case someone fucks up.

Obviosly safety cannot be engaged with a bolt open, so the question is a little moot, but if the rifle is not being used for shooting, the bolt should either be open (maybe removed) or the safety should be engaged. That's for cases when someone forgets to remove ammunition.

Best suggestion of all.

Theodore Dalrymple,

Not at all. The safety is only an adjunct to proper firearms handling. If proper firearms handling was strictly followed always..there would be NO need for a safety mechanism. On a range, you are teaching her very proper gun handling. With the action open..there is absolutely no danger of a discharge (self loaders/slam fire not withstanding)

Sounds like you are doing very well.

You betcha.

What do you think about these newfangled thingamabobs? A friend of mine just told me it was on his wish list. 410ga pistol?!?

That is old stuff - I could get one for my Contender - fire .45's or .410. I think I'll just get a 38 special for pellets :-) (oh - 28, 20 and 12 ga is also available if your wrist is strong!) Martin

I have shot the 12" and at 10' we have about a 3-4' pattern. Good penetration in wood. Yes, it kicks. Two pistol grips help control it. My aim point would probably be neck high. BUT, my goal is to have something with enough presence that it would not need to be fired. Car carry is a derringer with a 45-70 over .410/45 LC. "This is gonna hurt me almost as much as it does you. I'll just get to feel it longer." Most perps carry

Theodore Dalrymple,

Tim the Toolman Taylor, eat your heart out. Those fall into the "more power" category quite nicely.

I noticed none of them come with arthritis or skull fracture insurance. Is that an available option or do you have to get it aftermarket?

What's with these rifle- and shotgun-cartridged pistolas, anyway?

There's a double-bungee strap which can connect between the shooter's feet and hands. It's just $49.95 on sale at Wally World. . . . . (Yes, I'm kidding.)

It's worth noting that if you have a weak stomach, links at "ogrish.com" are probably best avoided.

Yes, negligent discharges are possible. But he violated at least one rule of safe gun handling by not having the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Not slamming the guy, just observing.

A short handy firearm with a rifle punch is a handy thing to have if you are a serious hunter. Plus they are FUN!

I have a sling on my hunting Contenders. If I have to shoot offhand out past 150 or more yards, I can QD the rear swivel, and lengthen out the sling and stand on it.

I won a bet once doing something similar..guy bet $100 no one could keep all 30 rds in a tommy gun on paper full auto at 20 yrds. I stood on the sling, then bought everyone lunch.

So what toys can we take to the range weekend after next?

LOL! I love it when someone makes a bet like that.
