Freelancer Payment Protection Act

So you can see the work-around, right? McD's will just put their liquid s*it into a 128 oz container (full effing gallon!!) with a screwcap on it, and say, Bon Appetite, muthafuckas, and F*ck You , Bloomberg.....

OR, McD's can over-inflate the price of one 16 oz drink, and for a penny more, you get two.

Don't get me wrong -- soft drinks are a positive nutritional EVIL, plain and simple, and the law proly WILL help somewhat, but still just a statistical smidgeon, health-wise.

My peeve is that we are actually REDUCED to this silliness, as a culture.... that we allowed Big Boxes to exist nationally (heh, internationally) is the problem from the gitgo, with carte blanche to exploit us, f*ck us, with every social/psychological marketing tool at their disposal.

I have noticed one trend tho: Manhattan Yupsters are noticeably thinner than the drudges in the other 5 boroughs, except fer mebbe downtown Brooklyn, where the Spillover Yupsters reside. The moral being, affluent narcissism seems to correlate well with weight loss/control.

That would be "leaf in the wind"..... unless that was a sly jab at being overweight??? LOL!!!!!

We can give them arm bands with a symbol, and a catchy name like Hitle^h^h^h^h^hObama Youth. Have rallies, sing songs of loyalty to the Fueh^h^h^h^h President.

They need to encourage children to report their parents' illegal drinking activities to the authorities.

Sorry, I should have qualified that. I believe he was referring to drinks bought in grocery stores. But maybe he meant all bottled drinks.

Oh, and it doesn't apply to fruit drinks and some other things. Just soda.

NOW you're thinking like a marketer.

Now you're thinking like a Marxist. d8-)

They're just nervous wrecks from dodging taxis. I worked there for four years.

Do you remember Ed Zern, who wrote a column in _Field and Stream_ (did you read that?), titled "Exit, Laughing." He wrote one once titled "How to Cross 42nd Street." He pointed out that grandmothers who negotiate Manhatten streets are faster sprinters than high school girls from the counrty. The slow ones get run over, so it's a fast, fit bunch of grannies that survives. Maybe the fat Manhatten yuppies get run over by buses.

Maybe you've heard of Zern. He used to publish a lot of Q&A items, like this:

Q. When I became engaged, my fiancee said she understood how much I loved to hunt and fish, and promised never to interfere. Now we're married, and she nags me night and day to give up outdoor sports altogether. She says if I loved her I'd gladly stay home. If this keeps on I'm going to blow my brains out. Please give me whatever advice you can.

Which is ALWAYS what happens when inexperienced chess players (us) play chess with experienced chess players (them). The only way to not lose the game is to have no moves made at all -- ie, zero change. In the Orwellian zeitgeist, all change is bad change.

Another way of visualizing this is: When someone has a 36" c*ck nudging your ass, generally the only direction it goes is deeper.

And I think 36" is a totally conservative estimate....

Almost ALL Federal "acts" do the OPPOSITE of what their title states, and as a side "benefit" do up to 10 times more damage in other non-related areas.

Still, i bet it will do the opposite of what the title states, PLUS a lot of additional damage.

Heh, fruit juices are just as bad a soders, except for the phosphoric acid in dark colas, and that chemical soup called Mountain Dew. 99% of fruit juices are sig'ly higher in cals than soders, some of them (nectars) almost double. With very little nutritional redemption.

Part of the reason it doesn't apply to fruit juices is because Snapple's dick is in Bloomberg's mouth AND ass -- after they pulled it out of Guiliani's sundry orifices -- having contracted exclusive rights to NYC schools.... incomprehensible, but true. Bloomberg got hundreds of million$, iirc.

This Big Box thing was the distant start of our economic implosion, imo.

Social Darwinism at its most literal... LOL

Kinda near the edge for Field& Stream, eh?? LOL

That was Zern. He was like that all the time.

Ed Zern is the reason I write for a living. In 1980, when I was still working in Manhatten, I decided I'd go over to Field & Stream's office and tell him that. But I talked to someone who knew him and he said that Ed was losing it, and he had gotten pretty crazy. As if I didn't think he was always crazy, having been reading his columns for 22 years.

Anyway, it made me sad, because I really wanted to meet him. I don't know what he would have said -- would he have apologized for sending me down the primrose path?

Another good one, and typical Zern, is "How To Kick a Duck":

Is there any decent way to get to the text of the proposed law?

So what is your solution for the excess health care costs attributable to illegal drug addicts and HIV vectors?

my solution, as a liberal is to let them die. repeal the "must care" law that requires that emergency rooms treat anyone who shows up and just let those without the ability to pay die. That's how it used to be before we had advanced medicine. Those who are repelled by this could buy medical insurance for the indigent via the march of dimes.

They don't let Congress read them before a vote, so why should they let you?

I do a minimum down and progressive payment at specific intervals that are predefined in the contract for my contracting (licensed) business. 1/3 down. 1/3 when the materials hit the job site before work starts, and 1/3 when the system is working (but extras and tweaks may or may not be done). For even larger jobs I usually define a longer more structured progressive payment schedule. It is my understanding however, that some states like the socialist police state of Kalifornia do not allow aggressive payment schedules like mine for contracting. I don't work there. Problem solved.

For machining (which I only do a few small specialty custom areas) I require

100% in advance. I do offer liquidated damages if I do not meet MY deadline that I give the customer when I accept the job. It might be done by this time, but worst case and I have to repair a machine first it will certainly be done by deadline. By putting myself under the gun I really push myself sometimes, and sooner or later I'll have to pay a customer back because I guessed wrong, but I'll learn from it when I do.

I don't think I really need to worry about a freelancer law as I have been a licensed contractor for 18 years and can clearly show I am an independent business, but I can see unions desperately trying to save labor as they watch the financial portion of their power base go to China. With out production in the US the unions have no money to buy power. Who knows what they might succeed in doing through legislation. Look at the dominant (not equal as it should be) control they have over labor in some states. They need either money or legislation to try and stay afloat. The money is going to China no matter what we do.

In fact I think we need to train a generation of accounts, economists, and industrial engineers to find way to revitalize US production or we will be done in the world in 2 generations. (some claim we already are) Just my opinion of course.

... and regardless of your opinion. Those people are right. When the economy is this s***ty working is better than not working. Even risking not getting paid is worth it if the alternative is knowing you won't get paid. Be freaking real people. Its bad. Working beats not working. The government trough isn't doing us any favors in improving things either it just keeps people from rejoining the productive side of the economy and improving the financial situation.

I've had half a dozen guys call me up and say they would be willing to do the work I couldn't pay them enough to do a few years ago. (Work I do myself. LOL) When a man swallows his pride like that it shows you just how bad things really area.

Everybody should have freedom and if there is an economic cost everybody should share it. The notion that someone's activities should be restricted by law to save two cents a year on everybody's insurance premium is simply wrong-headed.

And such laws will not prevent expensive long term care--everybody dies of something you know and with modern medicine the progress of just about all the ways to die gets prolonged at great expense.

Huh? I'm sorry, but you're not making any sense here. Is there some specific policy to which you refer?

If you know of another post in which I have expressed a viewpoint at variance with the above, please provide a link to it.

I've found that to be the case. Patriot act is one such example.

The "must care" law is communism, after all. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
