Smirk and scoff as you wish- I am using a locked down system to access the Internet; no FLASH allowed.

Besides this actual truth of the matter I am against the creation of a web page that has no alternative to having the latest doohickeys to participate. It's not a Flat Earther mentality, it's also not a 'what ever is new is better than OK, it's mandatory...' type attitude.

When people write their email and/or newsgroup posts in HTML, when web sites shut you out due to auto-detect of some browser add-on it is a mistake they are making.

Might doesn't make right, it just makes resentment. And smuggness.

So stop playing at work, and use another system. ;) Better yet stop complaining that it's too bad something uses JAVA & Flash.

Sigh... Part of what I do for a living is set up and administer secure computing environments for schools and libraries. Multimedia plug-ins are a huge problem, not only from a security point of view, but also because of performance and bandwidth issues. So 90% of the time these plug-ins cannot be allowed.

And yes, the users DO have a real need to look at content from a wide variety of sources that wouldn't seem to be "educational" at first glance.

You know what? I've never once looked at a web page and thought, "Gee, that would be a lot harder to understand if it weren't for the animated dancing bear." OTOH, I've closed innumerable web pages in frustration because of the excessive, gratuitous use of animations and Java-based automation.

FireFox. Its a fast web browser that has these wonderful plug-ins. One of the plug-ins is for flash. It will replace a flash animation with a big "F" until you click on it to display the flash. Another plug-in is AdBlocker. It will block all the stupid ads on a site as well.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of plug-ins available for FireFox. FireFox is free (open source and costs nothing) and faster than IE.

For those that can't install any software, FireFox can run from a USB thumb-drive as well. Nothing to install.

I use Opera. It runs the crap laden sites fine, I just detest crap laden sites. I also have Mozilla installed.

There are still sites on occasion that will only work with IE, though.

I agree. Crap is crap...but atleast non-IE browsers help to filter out the crap. If I run across a site that is IE only, I make note of it, notify the site owner/web master and tell them that I will more than likely never visit their site again until they start following W3C standards.

If people code to FireFox (or Opera or Safari or ... well, maybe not Lynx) then they'll work in IE but not always the other way around.

I've recently started using a wireless mobile device to access web stuff from anywhere. All the crap used nowadays makes it very difficult to use remotely.
