A few dumb Questions on the Casting Article in FSM

I have been reading over the article by Matthew Usher in this months issue of Fine Scale Modeler. I really want to try and cast parts that I will need more of. When I go to the CHILLER convention there are usually people selling stuff called "smooth on" or something like it.

Does anyone use this and is it easy to work with. As easy as what they show from the Micro-Mark catalog. Is there anything that's as good but which might be a little cheaper to start out with then the product they show. I do want you to know that i'm not "cheap" , i'm just on a rather tight budget right now. What with buying Fuel and what not over the winter.

Are there any good tutorials on the web where I can have some tips for this stuff. If anyone can screw this up it's Me okay. But I really would like to learn to do this.

That is why i'm asking for all the Help I can Get.

Thanks again for your help

and get the "Free" DVD on casting resin and other goodies. It will give you some idea and what to do and their product line looks pretty good too.....

Carl, Most of the directions in Fine Scale are correct. The only product I don't use is the release agent (at least for single part molds). After talking with a couple of guys in my IPMS club who do aftermarket sets they said for most things you can get away without using any type of release agent on your master (don't know about the two part mold, haven't tried one yet). As far as casting resin and RTV goes, if there is a TAP plastic near you they carry RTV mold supplies, as well as casting resin. Prices are about the same as MicroMark and no postage. Eric

I had one bad experience with a mold that bonded so firmly to the master that it was impossible to separate them without destroying both.

As a result, I now always use a release agent when making & using molds, even if I think it's unnecessary. Think of it as insurance.

I use the Smoothon SC310 resin with a work time of 20mins and demold of

90 mins ,and the Smooth-sil 901 silicone mold rubber ,I've had excellent results with both.I usually buy the starter kits which are reasonably priced .

Carl, I have been to the Smooth-On Factory in Easton PA and can tell you they have many formulations for different molds, shrinkages, curing times, rubbers that don't need release agent, etc.

Smooth on products are really great, but you have to research what will be the best formulation as there are so many.

Best thing to do is go to thier site:

Then call them if you have any questions.

Also there is a 'Casting' list at yahoo groups where you can get more info
