Did they ever explain why they put that door in the bottom of the first stage?

For the passengers to get on board. If I remember correctly mine came with four passengers originally included in an airliner kit and a small boarding ramp. It's funny the thing is huge with a small satellite - kits of Moon rockets at the time were smaller. Use the door to get a feel for the size of the thing.
