I have a model that I need to paint gloss white, the base plastic is grey. I have tried dusting on the white, but to get good coverage, it is still much too thick, any hints ?

Thin the paint...and then thin it some more...then add more thinner. I found this out the hard way trying to paint a 1/72 XB-70. Thinner is better - some say the constancy of milk, I say just a bit thinner than that.
Or try using a white primer unndercoat. Peteski
I undercoated my XB-70 with silver and found that the gloss white covered that very nicely once I thinned it enough.
