Well, it is a bit unfair to slam Hobby Lobby for that variety of selection. It is the same for most all hobby shops. The kits they carry come from "companies"....companies which exist to make money. Does a company *need* to come out with yet another Bf-109 Fighter, or Panther tank? That is debatable...but it *does* "pay for the groceries".

Yeah, there is very little sci fi in production from major companies. I would say amazingly more than this time last year, but most of that is Star Wars re-issues.

I'm curious which stores in KC you visited. At the three in my area (south side), they've got the Revell 1/96 Saturn V, the high-dollar Star Trek Enterprise (sorry, not familiar enough with the new series to tell, but I think it was the latest TV show), the Polar Lights Enterprise and Klingon cruisers, and yes, the Star Wars reissues including the cutaway Millenium Falcon. They also had multiple brands of Space Shuttle kit, another Polar Lights Star Trek kit that I don't recognize (looked like a one or two person runabout). They also had the Mercury Capsule kit.

Having said all that, the sci-fi and space stuff is by far the least represented section of the model kits at HL, and always has been.

On the other hand, they had no less than three of the Dragon 3 in 1 kits (the early Tiger, and two different German 251 half track kits), the new Tamiya Leopard, and both the Tiger and Sherman in the 1/48 series. They also had the Bergetiger, Firefly and T-34 kits by Dragon, as well as the King Tiger.

The 3 in 1 kits at $17 a pop have got to be the best deal in scale modelling. I've picked up multiples of each, thanks to HL.

If you're an aircraft guy in KC, you had your choice of both Academy

1/32 F-18s, the Academy 1/32 F-16, the MRC 1/48 Sea Stallion and the 1/35 DAP and Blackhawk kits. Not to mention yards of cars and other aircraft.

I understand your point about being disappointed regarding your area of interest, but for those with more varied tastes, it cannot be beat.

They pretty much react to the markets needs,IOW what people buy. We've

3 HLs in town and all 3 much have a good selection of stuff. SciFi is at a minimum but I'm sure that because fewer people buy them than cars and AC. I love ships and although the selection is ok, its a lot smaller than cars and AC. A number of years ago all of ours went thru a 'cleansing' process on older models, stuff the public just wasn't interested in. They sold these for 90% off. Took right around 1 year to balance it all out. I bought tractor trailer rigs for $2ea then plus some other stuff. They did the same with their HO RR cars selling them for 66¢ea. Now they no longer have non moving stock on the shelves and have reacted to what the market asks for. Just my 2¢. John
