P-47D Bubbletop

I recently reread Roger Freeman's "Republic Thunderbolt". He notes that the Army's original plan was to produce the bubbletop as the P-47L. One aircraft was completed with this designation. Then, it was decided to produce it as the P-47D-25. He gives no explanation for this change. Does anyone know why this happened?
