paint question

Im about to paint model car that I built for a friend, and seem to be between a rock and a hard place. I ordered some laquer paint in aerosol cans from MCW. The problem is, I can paint the car and put the aftermarket decals on it...but the glosscoat is not compatible with the decals. So Im guessing the the laquer glosscoat would eat up the decals. Once the laquer paint and the decals dry thoroughly, could I glosscoat the whole thing with enamel gloss? Would there be any adverse reactions from this? I really dont want to (and cant afford to) experiment on this project. Thanks for any and all help with this problem.----Larry M. (back to modeling again after surviving Katrina)

I don't know your materials well, but if you use a hot coat over the decals, there's a good chance that you could attack them. You can do an acrylic barrier coat (I would think that the safest) or you could use an enamel glosscoat, followed by *thin dustings* of the final gloss coat. By doing thin dustings at first, you can build up another layer on top of the enamel gloss coat. Eventually, you can probably put it on heavy enough to rub it out.

I know guys who use Duracryl, and will do as many as 30-40 finely sprayed coats, as opposed to 8 or so with a regular not-as-hot gloss coat. It all depends on how careful you want to be and how patient you want to be.

Key is to not put it on too heavy, which is very difficult with rattle cans.

No, Testors glosscoat for one will not eat up decals. Yet it is a lacquer like substance.

Also, you can use enamel or acrylic OVER lacquer. You just cannot use them UNDER.
