The reality is that ISPs are too cheap to pay for the resources needed to operate an decent news server (storage, bandwidth, etc.), so it has nothing to do with a "decline in popularity". What a crock!

My ISP's news servers have always sucked, so several years ago I switched to a stand alone newsgroup provider (NewsGuy.com).

Not thrilled with having to pay extra for my newsgroups, but it's been worth the investment over time (complete posts, good retention, reliable server connections, accessible support people).

Considering the number of ISPs dropping Usenet these days, I'd imagine everyone will have to go through a stand alone provider for newsgroups at some point in the future. Sorry for the rant :)

Yeh... I'm pissed about this too John.

I'm thinking of changing to an ISP that has a usenet server. This mob doesn't deserve my business.

Any suggestions?

John,

Are you really surprised ? This is typical arrogant behaviour of our biggest monopoly here in NZ. What is worse, the government inaction at removing that monopoly. ... ohh wait a minute ....the government is a rather large shareholder in Telecom receiving a rather large dividend. This is a very good reason governments should not be part of big business.

Vote with your feet and walk away from them, move all your business including phone to another ISP. If enough people do it, our mealy mouthed politicians might get off the fence and finally act instead off talking. I've been with Ihug for a while now and have had no complaints. Newserver seems to be fairly reliable.
