In the US (NMRA S-3.2) the gauge is 1.250in (31.75mm), in Europe 32 mm.
For 1:48 scale, 1435:48 = 29.90mm or 1.177in would be appropriate.

There were some modellers in the USA/Canada who adopted this gauge for
1:48 scale. Probably still are. Then there was Q scale, with a gauge of 1.1875" (pretty close to 1.177, you see....) More common was 17/64ths scale, for which 1.250" gauge was within 0.0006" of true value. There were probably more variations of sclae/gaiuge for "O" than for any other. The most common European scales were/are 1:43 (or 1:43.5 for the purists), and 1:45. In the UK 7mm = 1ft scale was/is used, which is 1:43.5 Hence 1:87 for "half 0". And so on.It's all rather confusing, really. ;-)

Are you pretending to be stupid or are you stupid? I'll explain it one last time:
- the International standard for HO is 1:87. (has been since the 1930s)
- the one exception was Britain, where the standard was 3.5mm:1'.
- The US NMRA in recent years decided to make the US standard 1:87.1
Now, if the difference between 1:87 and 1:87.1 is insignificant, then why did those standard setters in the NMRA add that point one to 1:87? The additional point and numeral make any scaling computation more complex and therefore more liable to error. Any modelling of prototype to scale requires numerous calculations so the probability of errors in any project is greatly increased.
I'm currently involved in designing a kit for a locomotive, based entirely on drawings and a few photos. This involves a lot of scaling comutations and I'm quite capable of making my own errors without the assistance of silly scale ratios.
BTW, published drawings aren't neccessarily correct and differences between apparently the same prototypes aren't neccessarily incorrect.

When I began my "sweat equity" in my various homes (1972) tools and materials were in a mix of metric and imperial. Sheet board (ply etc) was produced on machinery sized for imperial measurements, timber in metrics sold by individuals who had had a lifetime with the archaic measurements an couldn't change. (story from 1978: In hardware shop: "I want a dozen 6mm x 50mm coach bolts (to join baseboards)" "No problem sir." (gathers bolts) "I'll need washers and wing-nuts to go with those." "Washers, no problem. We've got 1/4" wingnuts?" "No, I need 6mm to go with the bolts." "we don't have any!" "When will you get some?" "When we sell out of 1/4"." "OK, I'll go with 1/4" x 2" coachbolts and 1/4" wingnuts." "sorry, we don't stock 1/4" bolts any more as there's no call for them."
Back when O gauge was invented the USa had standard gauge and broad gauge railways. 1:48 was an average of the two. ;-)

You miss, or purposefully ignoring the point.
1/4" is a convenient dimension for those with 'normal' [read commonly available] rulers.It's 'Close Enough' for the majority of folk. [Remember, back then it was not uncommon for "O" to be three rail, using an 'outside third rail' also, another GLARING departure from reality in most cases.]

Sorry Greg, the 'Broad Gauge' was all 'standardized' around the time of the Civil War (for the railroads). The B&Os Broad Gauge 7' (I think it was), went away before then. Now Trolleys (Street cars, were another matter ---- some cities specified a 'Broader that the railroad' gauge to prevent waking up one morning to find a 'Railroad" running down Main Street. [Cross country RR builds to edge of town, ties into street car tracks, continues construction on the other side of town.]

That's because 32mm is the wrong gauge for 7mm/ft scale.
1435mm/(12*25.4mm/7mm) = 32.96mm
