Completely OT - Photo Albums Online

My No 1 Son is currently on holiday in Oz and he's going to bring an awful lot of digital pictures back with him that he's going to want to share with an awful lot of people. I know some people in here make use of "ready-made photo albums online" - something I think he could just about cope with. (This being the son who'd got "plenty of credit" on his PAYG mobile phone when he went abroad - all £7.00 of it!)



Does this facility cost?



Are there free ones, and if so, any recommendations?

As above, but it depends how many pics he wants to place on the site. Webshots is great if he can stay within the free limits.

I also use Webshots but it works so well that I changed to the paid service. £31 for 2 years unlimited webspace. See my website.

The one I use is Image Shack.

It is free to post the images there, he will just need to log in to set up his space, the images will be there for one year from last access and he can just post the links for people to follow. As many reminded me, get him to shrink the image a little before posting if his friends are not all on broadband.

They state that the max image size is 1024 kb - seems a bit small to me. Perhaps you could give me your page details on this to enable comparison with Dave's community webshots site. Regards Pete Stockdale

Given that an image with a file size of around 100K takes near enough 25 seconds to load for a 56K modem user, anything much larger is hardly user friendly to a large proportion of potential site users. Files of the size you consider small would take near enough 40 seconds to load for 512Kbps broadband users. The vast majority of PC's are set at a resolution of 800x600 pixels. In most cases there is little point in setting an image at more than a width of 780 pixels, with correct and careful compression few images, even of that size need to exceed a file size of 100K.
