Prompted by the Engineer's Emporium ad in this months SEM which features the 'Pioneer' engine (open crank two-stroke with automatic inlet and exhaust valves!), I revisited ETW's article on the Loyal cycle:-

In this he says that despite many enquiries through museums and archaeological institutions, he had not been able to find out anything about the original engine or the firm who manufactured it. Unfortunately Mr. Westbury missed out on the joys of the internet by some years, otherwise he would have found the following article from an 1897 edition of the French journal 'La Nature' as easily as I did:-
