Jack Sizer lists the XA as a 247cc (67x70mm) motorcycle unit dating from

1930/32.

The DZ prefix on the engine number indicates that it is a Mark IX A (Jack Sizer again). Jack mentions the Costarto set as an example of a customer's developments of Villiers' basic product to suit their own requirements - the aditional prefix letters presumably indicated at the Villiers factory that this was a Hamworthy 'special'. He also reproduces an ad. for the set which refers to the Hamworthy patent water-cooled head and exhaust ports, the latter not being evident on the example offered here.

Interesting, yes; Rare, probably - but IMHO probably not worth a great deal without the rest of the set.
