By a coincidence, I was flipping through "Power of the 9Fs" yesterday, and that also mentioned that the ex-Crostis were 8F.
I'll second that - some of those designs just have to be modelled. A
2-8-8-8-8-2 or 2-4-4-2 + 2-8-8-2 + 2-4-4-2 anyone????
I read somewhere that a smaller, more vertical motor is being squeezed into the firebox area to allow for a prototypical gap.

That's an interesting page! Where can one get models of those Belgian or German locos?

Does anyone know how much the loco weighs?
Bachmann manage to do that in North America with their steam locos by using a belt drive. See their 2-8-0 and 2-10-0, especially the latter, of which I have three, they have lots of space between boiler and frames.

It shows enough, unless they are trying to squeeze it into the smokebox!
squeezed into
Indeed, there is plenty of room, gearbox between frames with (small but powerful) motor sitting vertically within the firebox area - anyone who has kit built will have used such a layout I expect.
You know, sometimes it's all just too much work....
