My transformer has let the magic smoke out. It's not so much the faff I object to as the smell!

I fried a DCC chip last week. Fortunately, it's not a loco that I use very often, but it's still annoying that I now need to open it up and replace the chip.

Did you open it up and look to see if the capacitors were the problem? If no other damage has been done it's not particularly dificult to replace them.

I've had 2 computer power supplies succumb to this in the last 9 years. The first caused the read heads on all 3 hard disks (main and 2 backups) to be burnt out costing me £450 for data recovery (NEVER have your backup disks connected to the same power supply). The second damaged the motherboardboard display chip but luckily nothing else so I could fit a cheap graphics card to fix the problem.

No, this is a core meltdown. It's a standalone 100VA transformer from The Shop On The Bridge, it's lasted 7 years and cost less than a tenner so I suppose I can't complain. Guy
