Waterslide transfers - avoiding varnish square

Hi all, I've just completed a Parkside Dundas brake van using Modelmaster transfers, and again have faced the problem of the glossy varnish square around the transfer. I know Modelmaster claim you can pull this off with masking tape after 24 hours, I have never been able to do this entirely successfully. Besides, no other brands seem to make this claim.

How then can I avoid these horrible shiny blobs on my models? I have tried trimming down the transfer as far as possible, but this is obviously not perfect. Would having a perfectly gloss finish under all transfers be the only way? Even on semi-gloss and satin finishes I have had this effect. Would this then mean a coat of gloss varnish if the colour I want isn't available in gloss, followed by transfer, then varnish of my desired finish? That sounds like it would obscure a lot of detail!

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks, Justin Colson

The latter is the generally recommended approach, as waterslide decals adhere best to a glossy surface. However, if you are having problems with the suggested Modelmaster approach of removing the varnish layer, try contacting them directly:
