Since you're looking for historical information, I would suggest that you talk to lock collectors and museums, rather than locksmiths.

nah, wish my parents would have taught me. when I was growing up my parents and their entire family spoke mainly cajun french and some english. (about 60/40 %). my grandmother spoke only cajun french. its a funny thing, myself nor my brother and two sisters, picked up a word.
