chuck key

What number chuck key do I need for a 1/2" cap. chuck with a 15/64" pilot? Is there a chart somewhere that has the dimensions for various chuck keys?

You don't state which brand name the chuck is. That might help someone to be more specific. I believe Jacobs has info online, but I don't have a link for it.

There are numerous stores and dealers that sell a 4-way key that fits many types of chucks.

Additional information. It is a benchtop drill press made in China. The motor is 120V 2.4A 300W. There is no model number. The only marking on the chuck is "1.5-13mm B16". The pilot hole is 15/64" as measured with the shank of drill bit (7/32 is very loose and 8/32 will not fit).

You get it from HF, Ace or what? I haven't pulled the chuck but it's probably like our $100 1/4HP (approx. 2.4A) 2" stroke 'press...

Chuck keys can exhibit remarkably human like emotions. For example:- Riki Lee Jones had a hit in the late seventies with ' Chuck-Key's in Love '.

I got it on Ebay. The seller said it was a gift and that he already had a drill press. So I don't know where it came from.

If it came from China, then it is *not* a fractional inch size. Taking your 15/64" figure and converting it to metric, I get 5.95 mm, so I strongly suspect that the actual size is 6 mm.

This may eliminate the normal US sources for chuck keys, as they do not make them in metric sizes -- unless one of the four-way ones mentioned elsewhere in the thread is likely to have one end which will fit it.

But -- if you do find someplace which carries replacements, I would suggest that the "B16" marking from the chuck will be what needs to be specified. (Or maybe that is the metric designation for the taper, since I believe that some of them don't use the Jacobs tapers. This taper will be important if you have to get a new chuck instead of just a key.

Good Luck, DoN.
