To Barry Tunick and Estes...

Looks like I picked a good time to come back.

Rubicon. Don't want

What about RTV's 'entry'? :-)

As long as the UK entry isn't the one which set light to a large section of Dartmoor - I'll say no more!

My question - to clear up something - did Estes stop making D12-7's or was that simply a myth? They seem to be in production now - I have some made this year. Previous ones I got hold of had old-looking packaging and a few were a little iffy!

Not from the inside stories I hears back then.

But I did get an emial response from someone at Estes saying that Barry did get my message. I'll take that as a positive step. I'd like nothing more than to see Barry return Estes to what it once was. But I won't hold my breath. And I'll have an escort if he's in the area.

Is it just me, or is the new Estes web site hard to use? It looks very slick, but I can't find a whole lot.

No, you're not the only one. I also find that it is not too user friendly. It took me a while to find their downloadable catalog and the graphics are too ram-intensive for my computer, so it takes forever. I also noticed that their is no way to order a hard copy of the catalog on their web site which is what I really wanted. Joe A. South Louisiana Rocketry #8

1) They asked for input on the website a while ago through 'select' channels. I know a couple of folks supplied feedback on 'what they really want to see' (content, organization, etc.) I have no idea how far and wide the request went out or what the total response was or what time frame they have for re-vamping the website.

I can use it fine with either the broadband or dial-up speed selected from the main page. I would like to see more instructions posted as well as 'revision dates' for those instructions so we can be better aware of errors and their corrections. Beginners probably need more of the basics (and easier to find).

2) Catalogs were gone for a while and only returned in the last few years as a direct result of RETAILER demands/feedback. They are intended as a tool (and a free one) for brick & mortar retail stores to get customers to come in and buy something. Online folks can see the whole thing on their screen (and even increase the viewing scale if they want to magnify something). Online retailers have the products they carry displayed in their own special way which varies from site to site. If you really want a hard copy, the nice folks at Estes may mail you one if you call or e-mail them. 1-800-525-7561.

It's not just you. It's high on animation, but low on utility and practicality. I've found the Estes website to be really frustrating to work with.

plotted their history

RTV have some of the coolest stuff out there, and a great sense of humour! The STC ship looks suitably sci-fi, but i don't suppose they're planning on using an Estes controller to launch it with....

There is an issue with them in the UK. Apparently they have been found to contain just a bit too much propellant (explosive in the uk legal definition sense) for them to be available over the counter in shops. I cant remember the exact details but IIRC the amount puts them under a different UN number. Anyway whatever the reason I dont think they will be readily available in the UK anymore.

I heard something about this, but as far as I can see the UN numbers on the casings are identical...

Also, from DRS's 'bulletin':

"Misinformation regarding the status of D12-7s has been cleared up. They are fully legal in the UK and are now on sale in the Deepsky shop."

Make what you will of that, I hope they remain available since in some situations they're quite useful (like clustering when you want to stagger the ejection charges for one).

D and under are one UN number. E+ is a different UN number.

The issue is CE markings not UN numbers.
