As a friend pointed out the other day, the casualty toll of American troops in Iraq is exceeded on a monthly basis by the murder rate in the two biggest American cities, staying home is dangerous too.

What your friend seems to overlook is the difference in reproachability of the casualties concerned. I could imagine that the American public holds your government directly responsible for the war casualties, but that murder casualties are regarded as the result of a society problem that cannot be solved easily in one government's term.

And the bill boards read "Who is the Manchurian Candidate?"
