File alteration flags

Simply opening a drawing file then File-Print flags the drawing ( or part ) as having been changed. The flag applies to the save dialog box that pops up when you close something you've been working on, and also in that PDM considers the open file newer than the vault version.

This is no big issue when all you've done is open some drawings to print them, but when you have a lot of drawings open and have actually altered some of them, but not others, its a real pain. Simply saying yes to the save dialog would cause local copies and vault ones to not be equivelant or rapidly find yourself at rev 999zzz. Saying no can result in a change not being saved.

Is there a setting somewhere that I can control what events actually trigger these flags? There are other events that trigger the flag that don't actually alter the part. File-page setup ( just checking paper orientation, scale, ect ) then canceling out is another.

First of all, if all you are doing is printing a file and not checking it out you shouldn't be trying to save it.

Second, printing does change the file because your print settings will possibly change.

Third, if you are using PDMW revisions as your revision number instead of the version number you will run into these problems.

In other words you might have to change your approach.

You may want to do one of the following (assuming you are using the "collaboration" options), a) release ownership b) if you absolutely require ownership, set up a lifecycle status that is "read only" where the owner can change the status as needed.

both of these scenarios will set local copies to "read only".

FWIW, I've been informed that "dirty flags" have been significantly reduced in '06.
