IC Reefer Colors

Dec 14, 2003 2 Replies

I picked up an old metal Athearn reefer (car # 50379) in the IC canary yellow with green lettering and green roof scheme at a recent show. I'm starting to refurbish the car, and want to confirm the correct paint scheme:

1 - Are the ends the color of the sides, the roof, or something else?
2 - What color was the side and end hardware?
3 - What color was the underbody? I found a picture of IC #50193 on

with dark ends, but I can't tell whether they are dirty green or black. Also, this appears to be a later scheme with yellow-orange sides, green herald, but black lettering, and no green stripe at the bottom of the car side. I didn't find anything on the ICHS site, or in several recent IC color books. Can anyone help? GQ

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' GQ,

I noticed no one has tried to give you an answer, so I'll offer the following:

I don't know the answer to your question but know of a couple yahoo email lists where you can probably get the answer.

The first is called reefer-madness

The other is called illinois-central-model

There is also a list there for members of the Illinois Central Historical Society, but it looks at a glance like you have to be a dues paying member of the Society first, before you can join the Yahoo list. The Society proper has a web page at

Go to yahoogroups.com, sign in, and plug the above list names into the group search window at that site.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

This was address in the Steam Freight car List on Yahoo Groups within the last month. Search on bannanas as that was the main topic.
