Unlike many (you?) I live in the real world of facts. ATT has nothing to do with this. They were broken up by the govt remember (and now put back together anyway). The govt tried to break up Microsoft in the 90s but failed miserably.

So the FACT is Microsoft runs the world's PCs. You can bleat and moan all you want to, but that is still the real world which you should enter into.

Who cares if it is OK, it is a fact and you are powerless to change it.

More Microsoft FUD. Site a credible source for your 98% claim. Most studies have show that they own about 80% of the seats and around 40% of the non-seat (server and unattended) machines. These numbers move around a little every year but, don't change dramatically.

Microsoft escaped the legal consequences of the courts decisions with a fortuitous presidential outcome.

My guess is that many of the pre-installed Microsoft systems aren't configured very well for the particular user who buys it. They just don't know enough about it to realize the situation.

And, how fixable/configurable are the Microsoft systems? They strike me as one size almost fits all solutions. I love Microsoft help. In most cases it doesn't, you just get some useless factoid that is loosely related to the help keyword.

Started on CDC 6000's, then Cray's. Over the years I've worked my way to PIC chips. Should be able to demostrate the new turntable interface by April??? Might even have it working by late June (just intime for the fair).

Anybody have a purchasing source for common anode bi-color LED's? Common cathode seems to be everywhere.

Respectable databases and java implementations are also available for $$0.

It all depends on how you want the $500 distributed:

I'd like to put as many $$ into the hardware as I can. As soon as you talk about an M$ OS the software costs rise significantly.

Every M$ vs *ix application that I have compared comes down on the *ix side, with the exception of Open Office and Lintrak. (hmm, been awhile since I evaluated LinTrak, I shuld look at that again.)

And we are ignoring the security issues, 70%-85% of what I have to do on the firewall/router is to protect the M$ machines behind it.

I have machines that run 24/7 (well, usually :) because other people use some of the resources and they are almost guaranteed NOT to be on my schedule.

Agreed, solutions for problems you don't have.

So like what CAD do you run? I prefer 3PI, although terrains tend to screw with my head.

Well, it's a pretty inexpensive CAD package: Turbocad Designer, costs only $40. works though, I couldn't create PDF files until a friend of mine told me about CutePDF. What a breakthrough. Now I am able to post some of my drawings for you good folks to use...

I've always been curious about linux. But in the end, I'd rather spend my time on the layout and money on rolling stock (as opposed to hardware or software) :-) The next computer hardware or software I want to spend cash on is a Lenz system, not another PC.
