I have seen the new el cheapo Bachmann toy-like locos appearing over here - I believe these are the same as the ones used as the basis for their US Thomas range - see e.g.
If they are indeed the same as the Thomas engines sold here in N.A, then they run quite well: smooth running, good control with the simple resistance controller (1 amp) supplied with the Thomas set. They do need lubrication, the factory-applied lube seems to be rather skimpy. Bachmann uses customers for quality control, so you will find the odd one with inexplicable hiccups. They do not have traction tires (tyres), a plus IMO. But I don't imagine you'll be running very long trains on your NG layout. NB that the wheels are to NMRA standards, but not RP25. You'll code 75 or larger rail.
