Bachmann "Billy" Experience?

I have seen the new el cheapo Bachmann toy-like locos appearing over here - I believe these are the same as the ones used as the basis for their US Thomas range - see e.g.

Are they any good? I am thinking of using them as an alternative to the Model Power locos as the basis for cheap hacks to On16.5. Anyone any experience of their running qualities?

If they are indeed the same as the Thomas engines sold here in N.A, then they run quite well: smooth running, good control with the simple resistance controller (1 amp) supplied with the Thomas set. They do need lubrication, the factory-applied lube seems to be rather skimpy. Bachmann uses customers for quality control, so you will find the odd one with inexplicable hiccups. They do not have traction tires (tyres), a plus IMO. But I don't imagine you'll be running very long trains on your NG layout. NB that the wheels are to NMRA standards, but not RP25. You'll code 75 or larger rail.
