Well, usually you can. You stand a chance of lead buildup at the front of the chamber before the rifling starts, but that can be cleaned out if you ever find a .22LR hard to chamber. The shorts work best with a tubular magazine, but as Gunner says some box magazines might handle them OK.

A good alternative is the Acquila SSS - SubSonic Sniper. Not as quiet as a CB cap, but they are full-length, reduced charge. They send a 60-gr bullet out at relatively slow speed, and are much more lethal than a CB short or long.

Personally, I find a tube-fed bolt gun with CB caps a great companion on a sunny spring afternoon on the back deck. There's something satisfying about working a good bolt gun.

Nuisance animals, particularly uncontrolled domestic animals, should be dealt with, if not by their owner, then by the owner of the property. I have much more patience with native wildlife than with dogs and cats. I don't kill the squirrels around here because (A) the raptors keep them down and (B) my wife won't let me. But they haven't been a problem for me. On the other hand, the next time the neighbor's min-pin chases my wife into the house, he's toast.

Used to have an old Ithica double barrel 410 that I took to the skeet course... Won it at a Ducks Unlimited auction... Could not hit a damn thing... Traded it for a Gibson Les Paul Guitar...

Had much better sucess with the Remington 1100, 12 and 20 Gauge's and my Belgium OU 12 gauge. Maybe I buy a Purdy some day, if I shoot 500 straight, but not happening just yet.

Heh! Our problem of late is the half dozen peacocks that belong to the neighbor. Did I mention she also has a dozen dogs and a few cats? The dogs chase the peacocks constantly, so they prefer to be at our place, where they are not molested.

The peacocks have raised our cost of feeding the songbirds and other critters, leaving a trail from one end of the yard to the other with their droppings. Last fall they also started destroying Susan's garden, pecking the tomatoes and chilies. Imagine my surprise when I walked in to the garage that's under construction to find they had eaten (yep-----it was gone, and lots of it) the pink foam insulation I've put down in preparation for pouring the concrete floor.

I've talked to the neighbor and requested they keep the birds home, much as we like looking at them. I refuse to allow them to destroy Susan's hard work in putting in her garden each year, and especially resent them making life more difficult for the birds, squirrels and chipmunks we enjoy.

Do peacocks taste like chicken?

In Texas, domestic animals that destroy crops or livestock can be destroyed, the carcass deposited on the neighbor's doorstep, and payment for damage extracted.

Here's what the site says (now that's I've closed all the damned w A friend of mine is about to have his annual cabin roast weekend, and he has chosen peacock to cook (he often chooses something a bit unusual). Although I am not a vegetarian, even this raises my eyebrows!

Peacock is a dark, sweet, juicy meat not unlike duck but considerably less fatty. I recommend checking the degree of fat on the carcass, and barding (draping with fat bacon or rubbing/injecting with butter or oil) if the bird is a lean one. Simple roasting or braising will bring out its unique and delicate flavor; do not overcook peafowl. A good herbal pairing would be herbs du provence with lavender and thyme, or perhaps fresh rosemary. Roasted or braised root vegetables or squashes are another good accompaniment to this delicately flavored and savory meat.

Disclaimer: I'm not going to the roast nor did I have anything to do with the choice of "entree."

Interesting that you anticipate resentment at the idea of eating a peacock. Is there a material difference between a killing a peacock and killing a chicken, or is it that we are simply anesthestized to the idea of taking the lives of some animals and become aware that death enters the equation only when we speak of eating an animal we don't unconsciously categorize as not-alive food already?

#12 "dust shot", generally pisses of the pigeons in the barn, unless you can sneak up on one and put it in his ear. The CCI shot rounds arent too bad for snakes and "up close and personal" I know of a couple people who carry them as the first round up in their 22 belly guns. Stick it in the perps face, squeeze off and blow both of their eyeballs out instantly..the rifling tends to spin that shot out in a rapidly expanding cloud. Once the perp is blind..you can beat him to death with a rock. Or leave him blind for life..tends to take them from a life of crime..unfortunately it generally puts them on welfare for life..so best if you use the 2nd round up, fired point blank into the ear.

Good trade. The 410 is an experts gun, but only if they are showing off. With slugs..they are not bad, but a 44 mag has more oomph and is handier.

Im not much on shotguns. Got a few..but dont hunt birds much anymore. No time. Do keep a heavily modified 870 next to the bed as a "repel all boarders" impliment. Much better than a handgun, but not as handy.

Ah..ahum...err..yes. The shrieking of peacocks can also be damned unnerving..and after one in the neighborhood took up residence in my back 40..causing me much fright, usually when Im was under something and it started screaming (sick wife and panic reaction)...it had an... accident. It walked in front of something moving pretty fast.

If they're mostly black with a white stripe down their back, that's not a squirrel - you're dealing with a Stinky Kitty, genus Mephit. And they are very mild mannered and will leave when dealt with in a reasoned and mild manner - mothballs and ammonia, other mild "Area denial" irritants...

Unless they feel threatened and you're too close, and then you're in a steaming heap of trouble. If they start stamping their feet, RUN. This is one argument you don't want to lose.

I draw the line with good judgement, and so do my neighbors. They don't poison or trap their neighbors' pets nor do I. If you are unsure of where to draw the line, please draw it on the conservative side and harm no creature.

Condolences. I would not think of using a .22 rimfire in my back yard, but an air rifle does the job very nicely and safely. My good neighbors actually cheer me on, call me up when they see Br'er Rabbit in Mary's tulip patch.

If you practice some you should be able to hit a squirrel or rabbit thru the eye at 10 ft with a CO2 pistol which barely makes a pop, and if you hit 'em in the eye the CO2 will do the job. I can't get closer than 100' to the surviving rabbits around here but squirrels on the deck would be easy game for a C02 pistol if you bother to learn to shoot it reasonably well.

I marvel at the humane approach practiced by an old and treasured friend of my wife's, said good friend being a gentle religious woman who couldn't bear to shoot a squirrel though she is plagued with them. So she uses a Havahart live trap to trap the little devils ... and then drowns them in the laundry sink.

Many years ago milady (new to me at the time) expressed interest in preservation of her horticultural endeavors, so after work we visited a nearby co-op to buy a Havahart trap for rabbits. We were both dressed appropriately for professional people. We accepted the proprietor's recommendation for a suitable trap. As he was ringing it up he asked me how I would deal with rabbits once I'd trapped them. I started to spin a yarn about transporting them to Springbrook Nature Center for return to a suitable habitat ... when milady quietly and sweetly said, "We'll take 'em in the garage and shoot the little f****rs!" I'd thought I was in love before that, no doubt remained thereafter. It has only gotten better in the 25 years since then. Imagine,if you will, Nana with gossamer skin on gentle hands sewing a fine seam on a quilting project ...with a .38 S&W on the sewing table she'd not gotten around to putting away. She sews a fine seam indeed, and her stitching with a pistol is also respectable. We are gentle seniors who hope to continue giving and therefore prefer not to become victims of predators who might happen by.

I never caught a single rabbit with that livetrap. I then bought a decent air rifle, RWS Diana model 34 in .22 caliber if it matters. We no longer have a rabbit problem. I shot only 2 rabbits last year, both at about 150'. Each jumped a foot and came down dead, neither bled a drop and milady's rabbit-fed tulips were fine indeed.

Mom used to drop birds attacking her tomatoes with an old single shot .22. From the back porch that was about 30 yds. We lived outside town a ways. One of my fondest memories is asking Aunt Mildred (Aunt Mullet to us) for bait for crawfishing. She'd take her chromed Remington 241 with the scope, lean around the corner of the house, and drop 4 or 5 jackdaws out of the cottonwoods in the yard.
