Perhaps it is different in your community. Here (Austin, TX), the Boy Scouts are treated like "the plague"...barred form many public events; barred from receiving money from groups such as The United Way, etc. Many youngsters are even afraid to wear their uniform to school (something I remember doing with pride) for fear of the abuse they have received in the past.

...whereas the homeless are needlessly coddled; and become celebrities (even running for public office); and are praised for their "diversity". Do a "google" on Austin's g-string-bikini-clad, homeless, pan-handling, frequent Mayoral candidate Leslie Cochrane (a MALE...lol), and you will see what mean.

Nahhhh...just put on a turban, and tell him you are on your way to the airport...you will be then "treated with kid gloves".

The permit you bought doesn't give you permission to fly rockets. It gives you permission to posess motors which could be used to fly rockets. That is, if you didn't have the permit, you would (could) be breaking the law even if you didn't have a rocket and didn't fly it!

While there are many examples of Democrats restricting our liberties, I cannot think of many by the Republicans.

The Republicans have learned how the Democrats managed to hold control of Congress for forty years and are now using the same tactics because they want to hold on to power. It's time for term limits.

I scored 90% on personal issues and 100% on economic issues. I lost points on "There should be no National ID card", I selected "Maybe". I knew I'd take a hit there. I don't like the idea of a national ID card, but with our borders as porous as they are something must be done to differentiate between those that are in this country legally and those that are not.

I used to be against a national card too but after researching the topic, I am very alarmed at our border security. Once they detonate a small nuke here, a card like that may not seem so bad to lots of people. If they can't stop women and children from crossing the Rio Grande, how secure are we?

Would a card cure all ills? No, but it might help.

It wouldn't even have to be a card issued by the federal government, a card issued by the states that met a national standard identifying the citizenship/resident status of the bearer would be fine. It wouldn't even have to be an additional card, the additional data could simply be added to our driver's license.

Didn't US Legislature just pass something about a national std for Driver's licenses just a few months back?

There was a case here in AZ a week or two back, where an "undocumented" fella, who also had been convicted of a felony and got busted again, (not sent back, but put on parole), killed his kids grand parents and uncle, and it seems drove his kids to Mexico.

The borders are a sieve. In AZ, prop 200 passed last Nov, baring state benefits to "undocumented" folks, and there are people that keep trying to stop it's implementation, as it discriminates against "undocumented" people. What they just don't get is "undocumented" people are here illegally!

I say something a few days back where they are saying that something like

Look at the TONS of drugs that come across the border. What's to prevent a small nuke and a couple wackos....

I agree with Ray. Won't fix everything, but might help - and probably would have saved the "undocumented" fella's relatives lives, and prevented him from driving them to Mexico!

On the homeland front, a secure national ID would also really help with the increasing problem of ID theft!

I understand this is a controversial topic. I'm about to make an extreme example which may fire people up and may seem to be intended just for that effect. Its not. Its an eample that most can probably understand, tho.

OF COURSE I realize that there are driver's licenses and SSN cards, census info, credit bureau data, Microsoft Passport databases, etc., etc., etc.

On the one hand, there are the benefits associated with the ID card itself.

On the other, is the apparently "simple" authority granted the Federal Govt. to ask for them. (Their use, issue, possession requirements, et al, will be enacted by Federal legislation.) THIS apparently simple legislation is the major concern of mine. Another incremental increase of Federal authority over citizens.

To each generation, a few more laws are not perceived as a particularly worrisome thing. But after many generations and many, many laws, fundamental shifts in power and authority occur between government and citizens. Certainly, our Constitution allows for evolutionary change and growth. Consider, however, that Congress has to exploit the Constitutional loophole of Interstate Trade in order to enact such things as Abortion Laws and the Clinton Crime Bill. There are few provisions in the Constitution which allow Federal Laws to impact States or citizens. Purposely.

Please consider how many Fereral Laws place restrictions upon your actions and require you to perform certain actions, and how many grant you additional freedoms and lessen constraints on your actions.

The practical, rubber-meets-the-road reality of the type of government we have will not change because of a major event or the trashing of the Constitution itself. It will come about because of seemingly innocent and useful laws enacted one after another.

I enjoy the personal power of sharing in the "voting someone out of office". I do not want to lose that power, and have a Congressman leave office simply because his time is up. The lengthy tenures is not the problem. The problem lies with the "nanny state" that far too many citizens demand. A populace the expects and demands that the central government takes care of all their needs....sadly...deserves to have their freedoms curtailed. (Ironic...how just a couple of weeks ago...so many Americans, who on any day *demand* that the government provide their health care, child care, education, retirement benefits, etc....and these same Americans were celebrating "Independence Day"...lol)

Way too much power has been given to the Federal Government. Despite all the (understandably begrudgedly stated) advantages to a "national ID card"; I would rather see a "state ID card". Each state should have the luxury of making these decisions, on their own, independent of the others.

My god, where have you been the past 5 years? Censorship. Abortion. Gay marriage. Warrentless searches of doctors, libraries, bookstores, baggage. Just about every other word of the Patriot is unconstitutional.

There is a difference between a passport and a national ID card. Soon you WILL need a passport, even to travel to Canada or Mexico. A national ID card allows any cop on the street to stop you and demand "Papers Please". It's what my fathers generation fought a world war to stop.
