Now - Here's My Question for You All :)

Are You a MODELER , Are You REALLY

When I am in Just the Right Mood or have gotten an Urge to leave the house and go to the store in search of that ''NEW--KIT'' Or just to pick up another Duplicate that will End Up being "NEW" to the STASH which is My Secret Place - My Kit Vault

I get all Tingly iInside. There's this feeling of anticipation which is just overwhelming. It Provides Me the very same feeling that a Big Game Hunter gets right before the Prey Jumps out at Him from the Brush. It is the feeling that something Terrifyingly Wonderful is going to happen. It's difficult to put this feeling into words but I do think you will understand what=A0i'm trying to say. Building models for Me as for Many was something that I ''fooled-With'' as a child. Then went back to later on life with a Bold Renewed Vengeance that only the ADULT in us could really learn to appreciate. The fact that I now seek to find just the right thickness of balsa wood strip for "Plank Flooring". And "Sand" them down before I put it inside one of my many 1/35 scale Opel Blitz Trucks is all the proof I need to Demonstrate the fact I am now HOOKED on My Modeling Hobby till the end of time. There's no better ''Obsession'' I know of.

It's our -MANTRA- our -MISSION- in Life

It's precisely after all is said & done what we as MODELlERS are ALL ABOUT. It's How We intend on leaving Our MARK on the World. I do know Acquiring kits One after Another over a Lifetime of Building and of being in ''THE HOBBY'' as they say is lots of work. You end up going to Yard Sales when ever you can to pick through the toys & games ,You Burst through lines of people milling about the tables to Shout ''Nobody touch the Kits they're Mine and I suggest that All of You Move aside so that Nobody gets Hurt'' And they stare at you Never Knowing that You've Spent Weeks which blend into Months which eventually blur into Many Years to make friends with Clerks and Managers in Local Retail and Hobby Stores In hopes they will call and let you know when the

-Next- shipment of models will be there. Those days in which fortune smiles in your favor and someone at a Store asks. "How many did you say you wanted me to keep in the back room for you , until you stop by to pick 'em up."

Well It's just like Christmas all over again every time One of Them Calls to Tell You that the -NEW- Kits are in. Then you hear the Magic Words. ''You wanna See Them before they go out on the Shelf tomorrow''

Now Tell Me This - And Be Honest Here.

Just How Many Here have -HID- atleast One Kit in a Closet or in the Garage. Or Outside the Door. Or on Top of a Shelf Unit in the Kitchen Closet , or the Fridge. Because you can not get it past a certain Family Member at One Time Or Another.

Because - If they see you with just -ONE MORE KIT- you will get -THE LOOK- or worse you get the -HEAD SHAKE- either one of which can be very deadly at times because You Know they Really Want to Ask You. =A0 ''Tell Me Just Why you Need That." Or even worse '' Sooooo Tell Me Just Where you Going to Put That One."

Well - If you ever Have. Then you Know what I mean. You can Tell the=A0Look of a person who just Does NOT Understand.

But We Understand that We still have to Love Them even though they're confused even though they just don't seem to get it. They seem not to have That All Important Modeling Chromosome. So they continue NOT to get it - But we still love them. It's what this is really about. It Does Seem at times be both a very Lonely & Thankless Job. But Then Somebody Out There has to Do it. It may not be for Everyone - But there are those of us who Choose to do it and we do it Willingly and Gladly=A0with the Greatest of Pride and We Do IT With Our Heads Held High.

It has even been known to put a KICK in our Strut while we walk through the Long Canyon Like Isles in Dept. Stores on our endless TREK for those Kits that we still do Not have. And ou can hear the People Whispering to Each Other as We Brush and Push our way Past All of Them

They Say to Each Other in Hushed Voice

I used to frequently wait until the middle of the night to sneak stuff into the house. I learned to do this whilst still living with my parents as my mother had a very negative opinion of spending money on 'foolishness'. I got really good at it later when married. I'd have trouble trying to do that now what with the crap that passes for street lights. Dang near need a white cane at night now. :(

Enzo Matrix reporting, sah!

I live in Norfolk (that's England, not Virginia!) although I'm originally from the north-west of England.

Currently on my workbench are: an RF-4C of the 10TRW, RAF Alconbury in Euro-1 cam, using the recent Xtradecals sheet. and F-4EJ of 302 Sqn JASDF in the classic grey/white scheme with the iconic diving bird on the fin. Decals are mostly from the kit, which has very extensive stencilling, but the squadron insignia is from the old Modelecal Sheet 43. Both models 1/72 and from the Hasegawa kits.

Leaving my workbench in the last month or so: Luftwaffe F-104G of JBG-31. Hasegawa 1/72, using kit decals. Aires seat. Cockpit and wheel bays detailed by yours truly. Swedish AF J35F Draken. Hasegawa 1/72 with detailing. Decals from Flying Colors SR7210. F-16C-50. 78EFS, Kosovo MiG Killer. Revell 1/72 with detailing. Decals from Two Bobs 72-033.

Looking forward to the arrival of the Hobby Boss 1/72 A-7A, which will not go into the stash but will proceed straight on to the workbench. After that there will be *yet another* F-4, his time a Lakenheath F-4D in the odd modified SEA scheme used by English based USAFE F-4s in the 70s. After that, a 1/48 Griffon Spitfire built by grafting parts from the Airfix 24 on to the Hasegawa IX. Either an FRXIVe or an FXVIII, haven't decided yet.

You should see trying to move it around - the top and bottom ion thruster arrays are removable, as are the engine nozzles and front crew quarters, but even then it's pretty unwieldy to put in a car. I found out the hard way that around four feet is the maximum size a model should be if you want it move it around easily, and three feet is a lot better. Weight is another problem; there's a big steel rod running down the inside of the ship that acts as its structural backbone*, and with the stand it weighs in at around fifteen to twenty pounds. As for the showering bit: seriously, that's the only way to clean it - it has so many delicate parts that you can't dust it, so I take it off the stand, lather it up with a soft brush and a dish soap-water mixture and lug it into the shower with me. In case anyone's interested, I have some jpgs showing where all the parts came from, and what everything is supposed to do that I could email to them.

  • If that sounds familiar, that's how the model of the Discovery for the movie 2001 was made also.

Well you have proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that you are indeed a Modeler.

That is One Awesome Build there Pat but I have to say the whole shower thing must get kind of Scary. What with All of those Jagged Pointed and Sharp Edges

Acutally, I would be interested. I'm trying to put together a 1:72 version of the Ehrikke Lunar Reconnaissance Vehicle and can always use tip for fiddly bits. Send them to me at braungart (at) Verizon (dot) net. I look forward to seeing them.

When I was building it, the stand hadn't been made yet, so there came a point where I had to get something to attach to it, and there was no place in sight to rest it while I went to get it... so the entire model ended up standing vertically on the kitchen floor, resting on its three small exhaust nozzles as I carefully and slowly moved to get the required part without daring to breathe. ;-)
