A sub-tribe of Nga Tahu. The Maori people of New Zealand come from a variety of tribal groups, basically relating to which of the eight canoes their ancestors travelled in in the migration which began the main settlement of New Zealand/Aotearoa around 850 AD.

Kai Tahu were a group who split from a tribe and moved well to the south of the South Island and in modern times were reabsorbed into Nga Tahu as that tribe expanded southwards. Just to clarify a point obviously misunderstood by many yanks, the "Treaty of Waitangi", (1840) which is our founding document, gave the Maori full British citizen rights in exchange for accepting the British Crown. IOW, Maori and naturalized immigrants have been equal in law since 1840.

Like all of you I too have strong opinions on this matter but, may I make the suggestion that our hobby be a respite from politics? These conversations had gotten so heated at our model RR club that we instituted an understanding/rule that we won't discuss politics at the club. We want to concentrate on enjoying the hobby.
