OT Viruses

Is there anything special about today? I get the occasional post saying "download a new MS security patch" or "Returned Mail" that contain an unknown .Exe file. This morning I have received about 15 from different senders and different .Exe files. I have deleted them unopened as usual but wondered if anyone else is having more problems than usual today. Sorry about the OT post.

Yup, I've had about seven purportedly Microsoft security patches this morning. I deleted them as well. Do not touch them with a bargepole. Microsoft DO NOT send out patches to all and sundry, it would really clog the net.

Me too. 36 so far today. A lot of mine are carrying a virus. This text is in the alert: "The body of this message has been replaced as it contains the Exploit-MIME.gen.b virus." I have reported the problem to out IT folks here. I will let you all know any developments. I won't touch them.

There are a lot of viruses doing the rounds, don't download anything you have no prior knowledge of, and as Arthur says, Microsoft do not send anything out to the world in general (unless they are charging for it!!)

Since using Mailwasher Pro I haven't had a single squeak out of Norton AV2003, almost made it redundant apart from the occasional manual check-over of the systems here and at home. With Mailwasher I can look at the waiting messages on the easynet server and delete them there, they never get as far as the PC anymore.

Kind regards,

Peter

Norton has detected worm.automat.ahb in several emails in the last few minutes. This is another name for the Swen virus and is a mass mailing virus that is hitting the file sharing sites very hard (Kazaar etc). Get ready to duck friends.

Norton's latest update for this threat was yesterday and if you use Norton it may be as well to visit their site and use the intelligent update option.

Just had a reply from our IT lot. What has happened is that someone (whether you know them or not) has tried to send you a virus. The exchange servers have blocked the virus and have informed you. In some of these cases a fake email has been put together claiming to be from Microsoft and has attached a virus (which also was blocked).

They continue to tell me to delete the relevant emails. The nuisance is that there are so many of the dam things.

Whilst I have no wish to offend anyone, this is crap. We all get them and if you don't know enough by now to get a decent virus checker then you deserve all you get. I suspect that most of the time that viruses waste is from people posting warnings to every freaking (sorry George) list/group that they subscribe to. Its about as useful and rather less interesting than posting the names of people with the pox. Enough already and fie on the originator. kind regards

Not quite as crap as you think Sir!

A virus checker won't stop you being hit by another blaster variant or any other virus which uses similar exploits. It will just get rid of it the next time it runs and you will get reinfected again through the same gaping hole ad infinitum until the hole is blocked. Thereby grinding your PC to a crawl as the virus spreads to more and more vulnerable PC's. I know I've been there with Blaster et al!

*** Where is the harm in warning others about them to raise their awareness and not accidently open the attachment. Even though I am a lurker I thought this was supposed to be a friendly helpful newsgroup.

I don't know, a listof pox victims would let us know who to avoid associating with!

Well, as there's not a lot of engine talk going on, we'd better discuss the weather then. :-) Did you get any rain today, Roland?

The number received today is many times normal and so may be worthy of mention. For those such as Roland, don't read the thread. Can I be more obvious than that!

Even with a decent virus checker the e-mails may still make it to your inbox if you have zone alarm pro inbound mailsafe option set on!

Some pertinent points with which I would not dream of arguing. A timely heads up is clearly merited but when the thread degenerates into a "me too" count of how many viruses each has received then it is a total waste of bandwidth. No rain here today. tara Roland

I've had >5,000 so far. At 100K each, that's a lot of bandwidth. At one point this morning they were coming in faster than all available technology could slaughter them.
