Thunderbirds are Go......!! For those who may not be aware, Bachmann have been licensed to exclusively produce models of the class 57's by Carlton Television and Freightliner.

Ah yes, this has been reported extensively elsewhere, but no-one has stated whether the model is to be in OO or N-scale. Bachmann / Farish already have an N-scale 47, so my money's on it being for the smaller scale.

Strange thing here though is that it's under the "OO" scale reporting and not under the "Developement News: N Scale"....... but, again, my initial thoughts were along similar lines to yours.

From the pictures shown, it doesn't look too bad in the length department....it's not easy measuring a photo' though, is it ;-)

How could Heljan, or anybody else, possibly produce the class 57 in Virgin "Thunderbird" and/or "Freightliner" liveries without getting into serious trouble.....Bachmann state that they have the *exclusive license* and would surely find it more prudent to produce both "N" and "OO" scales......

I thought bachmann had been licensed to use the name Thunderbird.
You don't need a licence to produce a model of something, just to use a registered name.
So, how are they going to use their licence???

Well, some of the livery elements incorporate designs which did require a licence. This is very good news for the first manufacturer to negotiate exclusive use. It keeps any rivals off their patch, even if the resulting model is not up to much. I hope this isn't the start of a trend!

I can understand the need for Carlton TV's approval, they hold the rights to the Thunderbirds TV series and as such are in a position to licence the use of the "Thunderbird" and various character names, but where do Freightliner come into the equation?

Didn't the trend start with Virgin and the Pendolino - the resulting model wasn't up to much.

Could it be because Freightliner is a registered name, style and/or brand....I didn't think you could use another companies name, style or brand for personal gain, financial or otherwise.....
