Hello all, Just heard through the East of Scotland Group that the Reverend Peter Denny died just before the new year, he was 92. I remember when I first started reading modelling mags like the Railway Modeller in the late sixties, his articles on the Buckingham layout and on building locos inspired me at least to try harder. I never knowingly met him but I know a couple of people who went to operate Buckingham from time to time and they said he was a knowledgable and friendly chap. Sad news.

Dave Franks.

Peter Denny's Buckingham Great Central layout was the first properly scenic layout I'd ever seen which actually looked like a real railway. It was inspirational to me, in much the same way as the late David Jenkinson's coach building techniques.

It's a long time since I last saw any coverage of Buckingham, and I hope Railway Modeller give us the opportunity of looking back at the great man's work.

I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who was able to manipulate the mechanisms of outings from school in class time quite well. A select few of us got a visit to Peter Dennys home to see Buckingham and the Clockwork garden layout as well. The teacher had told the head that the layout was computer controlled and hence it was the way of things to come. He omitted the bit about it being mechanical with bits made from Meccano. He also organised a visit to a builder of large model trams whoran them in his garden somewhere around Glastonbury ,that Gentleman passed away a few years back . I think the peak of our teachers zeal for rail related visits was a field trip to a clay Mine, got another brake van hooked on the back of the clay train serving it. Think it was £12 for the hire and our parents all had to sign some sort of disclaimer to British Rail. Some of us got ride on the loco.

They couldnt do much better than reprint his own article in Modellers Backtrack Dec91/Jan92. Talks about his ideas and good photos of the layout.
