The crankshaft problem often rears its ugly head everytime there is jump in power. Not a one time problem. Timing on nitro cars is something like 60 degrees advanced, maybe more if they are making more revs now. But the advanced timing has been known since the 50's.

To me the appeal of NASCAR is that it tends to reduce the total number of rednecks with a pleasant regularity!

Hardly. In fact NASCAR is one of the safest motorsports there is. And probably the most inovative. Many of the safety devices used in both American and Eurpean races were first used in NASCAR.
Some people need more power with helicopters so we use 30% nitro,there is a BIG difference in performance with the 30%. with the Rc boats we use 60% nitro if you want to win.
Same with warbird racing. 60-70% nitro is not unusual with the YS four strokes. I never wanted to mod my engines so I used 50% max.
