Has anyone else picked up one of these 1/12 scale Mercury Spacecraft model kits? This thing is absolutely awesome. It's a little over 2 feet from the retro pack to the tip of the escape tower and is more detailed than any other Mercury model I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it yet you need to go check it out at your nearest hobby shop.

What size body tube will it fit, ball park ?

11" ?

I would guesstimate about 6-7". The capsule diameter was around 80", if I recall arights after having browsed the declassified manuals (thanks tater!)

No, it's not that big. The heat shield is about 6.25 inches in diameter so a Redstone booster would need something near a 6 inch tube. Not an overly large rocket, nut it sure would look nice. A Little Joe would be very nice too.

It would indeed! FWIW, the Mercury Little Joe had a 80" diameter booster; at 1/12 scale, that works out to 6.67". The Redstone booster was 70" in diameter, or 5.83".

I got the Project Mercury kit for Christmas and it is a beauty. It's very nicely detailed. I plan to build it for the shelf and not fly it although I did wonder about it. A friend and I are going to make a Little Joe that would be approximately that size. The planned motor combination for our rocket might "harm" the plastic Mercury capsule.

I bought the rocket.aero Little Joe DVD mentioned also and it is really a nice piece of work. It is going to be very helpful for anyone trying to build a scale model of the Little Joe. Highly recommended!
