ROL NEWS--Sky Ripper Motors Certified

Jul 09, 2004 160 Replies

My wife often wonders how much time and $ 'normal' people spend on this hobby... I make other peoples's toys (hardware) 1 or 2 nights a week, that leaves little time for personal projects.;) My company ( my real job, you know, the one that actually pays something) gave me an HDTV as a bonus a few months ago, so far I've watched it about 20 minutes...

Yeah, I've already been pricing new BMW's for the entire Skyripper staff.:-0 That wouldn't be possible without charging for the hardware...;)

No, but AT does.

The manufacturer of the starter grains, AT, has all the proper approvals and paperwork, in "their name". you don't.

Yes they are Jerry... Eat your heart out.;)

Warning, Oscar award speech follows...

The 38mm line being certified wouldn't have been possible without the help from many people across the country, many of whom I haven't met in person. You guys know who you are, I owe you more than a beer.

please note, this was a good-natured jab, I've never kicked Jerry.

That's a bunch of crap. That should not be part of the certification. Having them shippable, sure, great, awesome, but there should ALSO be an option to provide your own igniters and pre heaters. I am guessing it could mean around a 3-5 dollar per shot cost savings. Not too important when flying J+ sized rockets, but a bit more significant with G and H sized rockets.

Hell, being able to advertise "lowest cost per flight hybrid system" would be pretty cool too. A preheater is just like a 2nd or 3rd pyrogen layer for any other igniter. The little igniter with easy to light pyrogen lights the layer of hotter pyrogen, which lights another layer of even hotter pyrogen. All it has to do is cut a hole in some nylon tube and get the N2O hot enough to get it's O.

Being happy about tripoli tell you how you should market and sell your stuff just seems silly. Then again some shmoe kid complaining about prices telling you how to market and sell your stuff can't be any better....right? :-)

Me either. Stop beatin you keyboard & do something about it.

BTW - manufacturers requirements have NOT changed.

How do you know?

Because they didn't try whiting out a letter from the feds & writting their name on it.

The solution is easy. Hybrid Manufacturers should certify their motors using non-pyro ignition. There is precedence.

BTW, I think $3-5 per flight savings is way too high. Preheater grains are made from scrap.

I think he is happy it excludes those folks who choose to sell the igniters separately.

Any exclusions are a central tennet of TRA. But they do not exclude fraudulators in management. Those are an essential element of the culture.

Also Sky Ripper was some sort of open source effort with varied geographical partners. That part seems positive and innovative. One criticism I have seen of it from local club members (hybrid experts and true innovators) is the simple fact the design is a direct copy (some say ripoff) of another commercial hybrid system. Those folks claim SR did no development themselves of note, they just produced somebody elses design and did whatever minor variations were required to get specific certified motors out of the general design.

The history of HPR is such a soap opera.

Jerry

Not necessarily. At $100 retail a pound and with an average mass of about 5g the cost of the preheater should be about $1.10

That's about the same price I came up with for RETAIL. And $1.10 is less than $3.

Non-Pyro ignition is cheaper than that. High Voltage method uses a short length of speaker wire. High Amp method uses a little steel wool and a length of solid wire. Both use a small shot of O2. And some electrons.

They did the same to CTI regarding the adjustable delays.

Neither has the selective enforcement. Compare how Kosdon and USR were handled...

What are you talikg about? THose two chose not to meet the requirements. Everyone else does. How is that selective? Oh yes - it selects the guys that don't meet the requirements.

Bullshit. The requirements WERE changed on me.

Adding ATF permit requirements is now known to be illegal by virtue of a court order.

But what's worse is I did GET an ATF LEMP for TRA and they STILL refused to renew my existing certs.

Jerry

I've been communicating with an ATF Inspector about my magazine. If you would like, I can ask her if you need a LEMP to manufacturer PADs. If whe says no, I might start to see your point.

Is she aware that they're exempt from the user permit requirements? You should probably be sure she's aware of that before you start trying to inquire about manufacturing...

I cannot stop you from doing whatever wacky stuff you want including getting an ATF magazine for rocketry materials.

Whatever you do leave my name out of it and have a nice life.

Jerry

He is too stupid to show the proper legal interpretation to her. He is going to ask an open ended question, take whatever verbal answer he gets, and nobody in the conversation is ever going to crack open the orange book or 27 CFR.

Jerry

I don't know what she does or doesn't know about it. To me, it's obvious that using & manufacturing are treated differently. If Jerry wants me to, I'll ask. After how he reacted when Fred tried to help him, I'm reluctant to inquire unless he wants me to.
