I saw this on yahoo news. Thought maybe some of you would be interested.
The new Star Trek won't beam up into theaters until December 25th. To bide your time until then, you can catch up on all of the old Trek adventures. All six television series and ten motion pictures are available on DVD. And scroll down this page for an exclusive first look at the new teaser trailer.
let's see. tos, maybe 5 i can watch now without being bored to tears. reciting the dialogue gets old, too. tng. maybe 4 ds9, alwyas hated it. veejer, maybe 3 episodes movies...none were really outstanding and brillant. can't name one i would seek out but there may be some i use as an lop if it shows up.
i think it's pretty much a dead franchise for 25-30 years. the easy availability will work against. we had withdrawl from tos, the came video recording cheap. trekkies and trekkers will get older, fatter, grayer and duller. live long an...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I hate to be a naysayer without even seeing this film, but I have to say that I'm quite concerned about it. It seems as though it will violate established Trek continuity. It is supposed to show Kirk, Spock and McCoy at Starfleet Academy and then aboard the Enterprise for her first voyage.
It has been established that Kirk joined the Academy in 2250. He was on the fast track to promotion and he became Captain of the Enterprise in 2263.
In the episode "The Menagerie" - which occurred in the first season of Star Trek, probably 2264 - it was established that the events of "The Cage" took place 13 years before. That would place them in 2251. From "The Cage" we know that Spock was already serving about the Enterprise under Captain Pike, with the rank of Lieutenant. If we assume that Spock was also on the promotion fast track, it would still have taken him at least two years to progress through the ranks of Ensign and Lieutenant(jg). Therefore Spock must have graduated from Starfleet Academy at least a year before Kirk joined the service.
It has also been established that after graduation Kirk was commissioned as an Ensign aboard the USS Republic. He later returned to the Academy as an instructor. Thereafter he served aboard the USS Farragut. In contrast, Spock served all of his Starfleet career aboard the Enterprise, so Spock and Kirk were unlikely to have met before Kirk was given command of the Enterprise.
In one episode ("Where No Man Has Gone Before") it is established that Kirk's best friend at the Academy was Gary Mitchell. In that episode it is shown that Kirk is distrustful of Spock, so it is most unlikely that they would have had any prior contact or friendship.
As for Dr McCoy, it has already been established that he never attended the Academy. He was commissioned directly into Starfleet. He wasn't even posted to the Enterprise until a year or so after the famous "five-year mission" had started. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" establishes that the ship's surgeon at the time was Dr Mark Piper.
Add to that the fact that the film will be produced by JJ Abrams, who is the creator of "Lost" (the biggest load of over-rated crap *ever* ), and you can see how worried I am about this film. Abrams is on record as saying "Being involved with a series that has a passionate and vocal following makes me incredibly sympathetic. They have put up with so many incarnations along the way. These fans, they are a smart bunch. They are an intelligent group. We are very respectful and we have no intention of subverting the material." He has also said "As someone who works on a show that has a very loyal and vocal fanbase, I do understand the need to be respectful ... I think we can do the fans proud." What worries me is that this is almost word-for-word what Jonathan Frakes said before he turned out the abortion that was "Thunderbirds".
It seems that this film will require some major rectcons to fit in with established Trek continuity. I *hate* retcons. As your link mentions, it may even be a reboot. After more than 500 hours of Trek that is already established, junking it all and rebooting the franchise doesn't sound like being "respectful" to the fanbase. The only good thing about this film so far is the casting of Zachary Quinto (Sylar in "Heroes") as a young Spock.
I read an article claiming it will be full of revisionist history and not very true to the original. So far the Star Trek franchise has been pretty good about consistancy. I'd be upset if this report were true, and probably not go see the movie.
LOL That scene led to one of the best in-jokes *ever*.
In 1963 Bill Shatner appearred in an episode of "The Twilght Zone" called "Nightmare at 20,000ft". Shatner was a passenger on an airliner who looked out of the window and saw a strange creature dismantling the engine. Of course, he panicked and made a fuss ("Oh my God, there's something on the
*wing*!") but no one else could see what he saw.
In 1983, that story was remade as part of the Twilight Zone movie, with John Lithgow playing the same part.
Fast forward to "3rd Rock from the Sun". In one episode, Dick and Mary get on a plane. Dick looks out of the window and screams "Oh my God, there's something on the *wing*!" Mary looks out and says, "Yes, that's the engine."
And then a couple of years later, Dick and Mary meet the Big Giant Head (Shatner taking the mick out of himself) drunkenly stepping off a plane. "Do you know", says TBGH, "I looked out of the window and there was *something on the wing*!"
"Yes," says Dick sadly. "That happened to me, too...."
It had better not be in a vacuum or the guys welding it together are going to die pronto, as they are in coveralls with welding goggles and masks on, not pressure suits. In the teaser trailer they are doing it at night in what I assume is the San Francisco Navy Yard. Considering the goodies Bones has in his medical kit, at the very least they'd be electron beam or laser welding it. By the time of STNG, they weld the ships together using Gamma rays:

's also a tad odd it has the name on it before it's even totally skinned, but this could just be a quickie scene. Anyway, one hopes it's not a actual scene from the movie with that prehistoric technology in it.
"Where shall we fly Superthunderstingcar to, Master Braun?" "I have a friend in the orient, Kraut. Ha-ha-ha."

Frakes always gave me the impression of someone who would do anything he thought would make him a buck. Absolutely anything. You ever seen video of him at a ST convention? He ass-kisses the fans to a degree that's disgusting to watch, and you just know he thinks they're a pack of losers who should be parted from their money ASAP. ;-)
"Never give up! Never surrender! To infinity, and beyond!" Pat
Exactly. In established Trek continuity, the San Francisco Fleet Yards are in geostationary orbit above San Francisco. We have already seen them in the opening sequences of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
