Re: Cancel flights, that is a joke, stupid US

The over all cost of medical care is cheaper in Canada than in the U.S.A.

One reason that makes the States more expensive, is the private medical system itself.

The Vancouver General Hospital has a billing staff of two or three clerks. A TV news program here in BC surveyed several American hospitals of the same size. They, usually, had a billing department of over 200 clerks, many for profit hospitals required a seperate office building just to house them. A BC hospital fills out ONE type of claim form. An American hospital has to fill out hundreds, if not thousands, of different insurance company claim forms for hunders, if not thousands, of different insurance companys. How inefficiant is that?

As to the American service levels and wait time Vs Canadian hospitals, well, what do you expect when in the States if you've no insurance, you don't get the same treatment as if you had insurance? In Canada, NOBODY gets turned away from a hospital because they're not insured and the Government Insurance scheme CANNOT turn you down for existing medial problems. Unlike American insurance companies will have a great list of exclusions.

Medical care should never be a for profit industry! It's a social service that should be available to everyone, regardless of their financial state or existing medical problems.

dear Ratty, Most Americans are suprised when they come here because it is nothing like what they expected, I dare say you would also say that. The fact is that there is no propoganda such as is arguably found in the US educational system, Children taking the Oath of allegiance? are you going to arm them if you are invaded by Mexico? The nearest to that is being required to learn the two national songs and they arent actually required to sing them, so where is the socialist mega state? Sweden has 8,000,000 inhabitants some mega state :) Powerless? According to Mao tse tung a man is as powerless as the rifle he holds, and I am very good indeed with a rifle :) courtesy of the British Army :) My nation is for your remembrance The United Kingdom, even though I live in Sweden, and the UK is like your nation a nuclear power with the ability to reduce the usa to a radioactive wasteland just as your nation can do the same far easier to mine, such threats are so stupid. beowulf

Our medical system's incentive is to deal with the medical cases presented. The innovation comes via the medical school and from the medical staff themselves.

The technologies come through collaboration between medical staff and the manufacturers of the technology. How do you think hospital profit affects that process?

I think you're off on an ideological sidetrack.

Oh, we do also have private hospitals. They tend to pick up the elective and elective cosmetic surgeries and they also tend to use the public system for backup when they get into trouble.

Oh, Lord, here I go again,

WRONG.

What do you do if you make a profit? You get money.

What do you do if you want more profit? Increase efficiency, and sell your product to more customers.

What do you do if you are a Government entity? You don't give a rat's ass about efficiency or customer satisfaction.

There is NO WAY IN HELL that a Government health care system will be

50% cheaper. Or even 1% cheaper.

Beleive me, I ~know~ about this stuff...

To make them see the opportunity that is waiting for them in the world, so that they may take care of hteir own wants and needs as they see fit?

Yes, it's a pity that actions don't have consequences. No matter how many poor choices you make in life, even after having all the information you need spoon-fed to you, there will still be a Nanny to take care of you and protect you from yourself.

That's nice...

Except you've forgotten how incredibly inefficient any government is. Take a look at the USA's Veteran's Administration (VA) hospital system, for example. Totally government run, and nobody consigned to it wants to be there; they can't afford anything else. The for-profit hospital next door (like Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where I work) is where EVERYONE wants to go.

Why? Try better treatment, better recovery rates, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

Wrong. It's the medical insurance billing, and federal HIPAA requirements, plus the fact that hospitals are FORBIDDEN to turn away patients any more. If hospitals here only had to bill the actual patient (letting the patient deal with the insurance companies), they could do with the kind of staffing level you describe. Of course, that just shifts the costs to the patients, doesn't it?

Pot ---> Kettle time again.

I've got some leeches in my pond if you'd like them.

No; his society is. When the government pays for all necessary medical bills (BUT NOT THE UNNECESSARY ONES), he thinks that that's all private hospitals are good for. Ipso facto.

I posted a reasonably factual but abreviated description of our health system - what do you have a problem with?

Congratulations,

The fact that you're demented, and the text-formatted manifestations of your dementia currently displayed on my monitor screen.

Quite possibly, but the point of posting is to exchange ideas. (Well except in Rattie's case where it's to insult) I'm not aware of being on an ideological sidetrack and you might be doing me a favour by explaining why you consider that to be the case!

Regards, Greg.P.

Hold on to them, you'll probably need them yourself!

Hello, Roger! Anybody home in there? The government DOES NOT pay for that social service (or any other, for that matter). The government does NOT generate revenue to pay for things; it sucks the money out of your wallet in the form of taxes!

YOU pay for those services with every tax you pay: income tax, gasoline tax, sales tax, VAT, etc. Your tax rates are WAY higher than ours for that reason.

But there are tradeoffs to that reduced cost - such as wait time. Every Canadian I know has experienced problems withthat. Why are so many CAT scan centers built along the border with the US?

In the US, NOBODY gets turned away from health care due to lack of insurance. The Government runs hospitals, some of which are the finest around. Not every hospital accepts every patient, but you can get medical care in the US regardless of your finances, thanks to the

40% of us who pay taxes.

We get better doctors because of competition...better facilities because of competition. All because of profit.

It's a reasonably factual, albeit ideologically slanted, view, to be sure.

That's a possibility with our health system, hospital administrators are charged with not making a loss which in fact means they must make a small profit.

An increase in efficiency is not automatically a benefit to consumers. It's more likely to be a negative. The number of customers is pretty well covered here - the entire population plus that of several other countries.

There are other ways to cover that besides maximising profits to the shareholders.

Hmmm - around 1970, our hospital costs were around one quarter of those in the US. A lot of that was due to use of facilities built during WWII and major upgrades were required from that time on. Our costs per patient are still far lower than US costs or even NZ private hospital costs.
