Your father-in-law sounds like a discriminating food critic. He used the PA maple syrup I trust, not the knock off from Vermont. ;-)

I prefer it fried thin and sitting on an egg sandwich made with an Amoroso roll. How can bread just melt in your mouth? Of course if you can't handle scrapple perhaps pork roll might be more your speed. ;-)

Pork roll can do quite well on an english muffin with just cheese. Ask the family food critic, he should be able to hook you up.

However if he says shoo-fly-pie is a delicacy I may have to change my opinion.

Your list is missing one of the best books I've ever read. The psychology of the mob mentality, how it's borne, what if feeds off and how it becomes a perpetuating entity and narrated from the inside.

"Among the Thugs" Buford.

Strongly recommended. I read it prior to the '94 World Cup which gave me a different outlook of what the World game really entails and what is riding on each team. The research was done from the inside during the '90 World Cup in Italy, and poor, poor Buford, the ending was painful from his perspective.

Blame it on B&Bs in Maine. The in-laws brought the recipe back about six years ago. The greatest thing is how versatile it is. I get to ignore the kids smothering it in maple syrup while I dig into mine with an over-easy egg on top of every slice slathered with habenero sauce, and my lady has hers with butter.

The Southwest's greatest contributions to "gag me" food are menudo or, for the more adventurous, tongue tacos. . .

Give 'em a try, they'll grow on you!

Soccer is like hockey -- if you don't understand the game, it's horrible to watch, as it makes little or no sense.

That said, the hooliganism that takes place at and around soccer matches is just plain disappointing. Hopefully as the sport continues to grow in popularity in the US, that aspect of it will stay overseas.

Soccer is only like hockey if you remove the goaltenders. No wonder there are riots at soccer games.... I'd riot if there was NO scoring!

But then again, I'm a bit biased since I'm from the 'state of hockey' :)

Hell, the hooliganism ain't no big thang. Get some gullible tough guy to wear a Giants shirt to an Eagles' game.....or Devils' shirt to a Flyers' game.....the results are too predictable. Their shirt will have a different aroma for the ride home. And not a particularly wonderful smell.

I recall a Penguins shirt wearing fool at the old Spectrum.....they were so brutal I sort of felt sorry for the guy for a split second.

Provincialism is the rule.
