I don't partake of any of those items. Sweetened or unsweetened. I don't miss them. The supermarkets are filled with alternatives, and with a little experimentation none of my purchases taste in the least like seaweed. (or sugar, or fat, or preservatives ...)
The flaw in your theory is illustrated by New Zealand - we have almost no mineral wealth, almost no oil ... We're forced to survive by producing from our land, basic raw materials such as meat, grain, wool, and timber. We do that and stand amongst the first world nations in regard to our standard of living etc. If we totally embraced "capitalisim" we would have no reason to continue existing.

The average convicted murderer in the U.S. spends about 6 years behind bars. The chance of getting executed for murder in the US is about 1 in 375, and much less for woman.
